Job Opportunity: Seasonal Aquatic Biologist

Overview:

Poseidon Environmental Ltd (PEL) will be hiring a motivated and independent seasonal biologist. The position is seasonal but there are opportunities for extension or full time employment for the right candidate. This position will be 90/10 field to office ratio. Much of the field work will be conducted independently in remote locations. Due to the remote nature of the work, candidates with first-hand knowledge of the eastern slopes are encouraged to apply even if they don’t meet the required qualifications. Training can be provided promising candidates.

Poseidon Environmental Ltd Aquatic Consulting

Poseidon Environmental Ltd. provides professional aquatic services specializing in road and stream crossings on resource roads. Services include Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) assessments and reports, obtaining permits and regulatory approval, stream and fish habitat assessments, fish isolation and salvages for construction projects, and stream crossing inspections. PEL tasks required of the Seasonal Aquatic Biologist may include:

  • Fish habitat assessments

  • Stream crossing assessments

  • Water sampling for eDNA

  • Report preparation, including creating maps using QGIS

  • Fish isolation projects and electrofishing including gear maintenance

  • Assisting in delivering training to other environmental professionals

Qualifications

Required:

  • Certification in First Aid

  • Willing to provide drivers abstract

  • Willing to accommodate shift work and overnight travel when needed

  • Experience and knowledge of the Hinton, Alberta region is strongly preferred

  • It is a requirement of the position to work alone in remote areas where wildlife may be encountered

Desirable:

  • Education in environmental, forestry, biology, or related field

  • ATV experience, ATV certification is preferred

  • H2S Alive and WHMIS training

  • GIS and database management, experience with QGIS is an asset

  • Experience in identifying characteristics of fish habitat in the foothills and boreal region

  • Experience conducting fish habitat assessments

  • Experience conducting stream crossing inspections

  • Experience with eDNA sampling

  • Experience submitting permits and notifications to provincial and federal governments

  • Experience with relevant legislation including the Alberta Wetlands Policy, Water Act, Code of Practice for Watercourse Crossings, Fisheries Act, Public Lands Act and relevant SARA documents

  • Self-motivated, independent worker

  • Experience working on construction sites

  • Experience driving on industry roads

Wage will be determined by experience and knowledge and range $23-$25/hour.

Applicants must be able to accommodate shift work (i.e. working outside of M-F, 8-5 when needed) however the schedule is flexible and typically a 40-hour work week. The position is 90% field based, with office tasks being work from home. The position may extend into the fall on a full or part time basis. The position is based out of Hinton, Alberta, but field work will take place across the foothills.
